Homemade Magic Through Foraged Cocktails

Crafting Cocktails with Nature’s Bounty

Imagine crafting a cocktail where every ingredient tells a story—one that begins deep in the woods, foraged by your own hands. Over the summer and fall of 2023-2024, I had the privilege of guiding intimate groups through the lush trails of Tourists Hotel, teaching them how to gather wild ingredients and transform them into luxurious, handcrafted drinks. These experiences weren’t just about mixology; they were about deepening our connection to nature, embracing creativity, and learning how to craft flavors that tell a personal story. What began as a walk through the forest ended in the creation of something truly special—cocktails infused with place, memory, and a sense of wonder.

Nature’s Role in the Glass

As the world asks us to be more solitary, we find ways to adapt and share through nature and connection.

Each foraging walk was an opportunity to connect—not just with ingredients but with the landscape itself. We searched for wild herbs, flowers, and berries, learning how to identify what was edible, aromatic, or perfect for garnishing a drink. More than just a gathering exercise, this practice fostered a deep appreciation for the natural world. Guests found themselves paying closer attention to their surroundings, discovering the beauty of small details—the peppery bite of a wild mustard flower, the bright citrus notes of a pine tip. Bringing these elements into a cocktail turned an ordinary drink into a sensory journey, one that carried the essence of the forest in every sip.

Creativity in Every Pour

Foraging allows us to be present by the way the forest shows its' resources only once we are at the forest's pace.

For many, mixology can feel intimidating, but this experience was about breaking down barriers and unlocking creativity. As we returned from the trails to mix drinks in the open air, I shared key flavor concepts and simple techniques to help each guest craft their own unique variation. By substituting professional bar tools with household items, I showed them that high-end mixology isn’t reserved for fancy bars—it’s something anyone can do, anywhere. With each shake and stir, confidence grew, and guests embraced the art of crafting cocktails as an extension of their own personal taste and style.
